Care & Support Ministries

Being a person of faith is no shield to the inevitable hardships and struggles of life. We still hurt. We still grieve. We still ache with questions that seem to defy answers.  As your church, we are humbled to get share in all of life’s journeys – providing hope, comfort, love, and support in Christ-centered care.
"Once you choose hope, anything is possible."

- Christopher Reeve

Pastoral Care & Counseling
There are seasons in all our lives when we struggle, when we hurt, when we encounter questions that defy answers.  In these times, what we might need most is simply someone to listen, to care, and to offer wise and spiritual counsel – reminding us of God’s love and of God’s truth as contained in the Bible. Each of our pastors is trained to offer such care and support in personal counseling sessions.  From marriage and family problems to deep theological questions, our goal is to meet the deep spiritual needs of our community.
Flower Delivery

Ever wonder what happens to Sunday’s altar flowers? White’s Chapel shares the beauty of these flowers with those who have been unable to attend Sunday services. Weekly, talented volunteers change the large arrangements into smaller arrangements and personally deliver the arrangements to individuals of our church community who are ill, in healthcare facilities, homebound or hospitalized.

Prayer Shawl Ministry
Knitters and crocheters… pick up your needles! White’s Chapel has an opportunity for you to remind others of God’s love. By following a simple set of instructions at home (or on the road) your completed shawls are delivered by the pastoral staff or care teams to the hospitalized, ill, those in the midst of a crisis, or suffering a loss.

Card Care Ministry
Members of this team write and send cards once a month to uplift and comfort those dealing with long-term illness, or those needing continued encouragement. White’s Chapel provides the cards and postage. Volunteers may perform this ministry from home.

Meals in Time of Need
If you can provide an occasional meal to members of our church community, Meals In Time of Need would like for you join their team. Volunteers of this ministry are compassion in action, as they extend the love of Christ through delivering meals as needed to those of our church community. Meal requests are sent via email from “MealTrain” where you can see the requests, the calendar and sign up online.

Funeral Ushers
Volunteers who serve as funeral ushers provide a warm, loving presence of Christ as they assist the officiating pastors, funeral director and families during the worship service celebrating the life of a loved one. Ushers, serving with the Coordinator of Care and Bereavement, greet, seat, and recess guests.

Funeral Reception Hosts
White’s Chapel may offer to host a reception to bereaved families, preceding or following a funeral/memorial service. Individuals serving on this committee provide a caring, comfortable atmosphere as the family and friends gather to share in a time together and a light snack. Working in conjunction with the Coordinator of Care and Bereavement, volunteer hostesses assist in the set up, serving, and cleanup for this ministry.

The above ministries would not take place without our loving and dedicated volunteers. If you would like to serve in one of these ministries or know someone that is in need and would benefit from one of these ministries, please contact: Sunnie Flood Coordinator of Care and Bereavement

Stephen Ministry (One-on-One Care)
Stephen Ministers are trained lay people who have a heart for caring for the needs of their church members and neighbors. Through a one-on-one relationship, a Stephen Minister meets with a person who has a need for someone who can listen and provide caring support during a difficult period or crisis in one’s life. For more information, contact the church office at 817-481-4147 or email stephenministry@whiteschapelumc.com.

Good Samaritans
There are times individuals in our church community are unable to attend the activities or worship services at WC. This may be long term for a variety of reasons (i.e., illness, age, or recovery from surgery). Yet, with the support of our Good Samaritan volunteers, WC’s love of Christ is extended to the homebound, those in assisted living facilities and hospitals through personal visits. If you would like to become a Good Samaritan or know of someone who could benefit from a visiting Good Samaritan, contact the church office at 817-481-4147.
TO NOTIFY WHITE’S CHAPEL OF A DEATH, PLEASE CALL THE PASTOR-ON-CALL AT 817-881 2124 OR CARE & SUPPORT AT 817-481-4147, X219.

The Christian funeral is a service of worship in which God’s people witness to their faith in the hope of the Gospel, the communion of saints, the resurrection, and in which the assurance of God’s love and salvation in Christ is ministered, especially to the Christian bereaved.

A funeral or memorial service at White’s Chapel United Methodist Church is worship of the living God. The funeral is God’s way of bringing comfort to the hearts of those who mourn as Scripture is reflected upon, prayer is offered, grief is expressed, and remembrance is cherished. It is an occasion in which we celebrate life and the promise of resurrection.

The presence of family and friends at this time supports and strengthens those who mourn. The service gives voice to the community which gives thanks for the life of the one who is deceased, and learns the valuable lessons for life through death. Thus, in the Christian funeral, we gather to worship God and confess our faith in a living Savior. Though we mourn our loss and remember our loved one, our eyes are firmly fixed on Jesus, the One in whom our hope is fixed.

It is our desire that the following materials will serve as a source of information which will be a guide for what is often an overwhelming experience of making arrangements for one whom we love.

May the peace of the Lord and the assurance of God’s promise of eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ be with you always.

Stop the Bleed
Wednesday, February 19 at 3:30 p.m. in Evans Hall Room 2235

“Stop the Bleed” is a nationwide campaign aimed at providing the tools and knowledge needed to stop life-threatening bleeding in an emergency.

This course is designed for the general public with a focus on controlling bleeding. In the wake of a traumatic event, uncontrolled bleeding can lead to death in five minutes or less. Such life-threatening bleeding warrants immediate intervention – and in most cases, the person who can provide that immediate care is not a trained health care provider or first responder. Simple bleeding-control techniques are easy to learn and can effectively slow blood loss and save lives. Bystanders with little or no medical training can become lifesavers.

Kim McFarland, BSN, RN, Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Fort Worth, Trauma Outreach/Injury Prevention Coordinator is the instructor of this free 1.5-hour class. Participants will learn how to recognize life-threatening bleeding and how to control it using tourniquets or other measures, such as direct pressure or wound packing. Anyone can save a life when minutes count.

One-on-One Care

Stephen Ministers at White’s Chapel are part of a larger organization of trained lay people who have a heart for caring for the needs of their church members and neighbors.  Through a one-on-one relationship, an assigned Stephen Minister meets with a person who has a need for someone who can listen and provide caring support during a difficult period or crisis on one’s life.  Sometimes this is for a short period of time and for others, it can be a longer term relationship.  We realize that grief and loss come in many different ways to people and Stephen Ministers have the compassion, love and spiritual gifts to share during this difficult journey.

Stephen Ministry is a Christian service with a strong focus on God’s love and spiritual encouragement.  Female Stephen Ministers are always paired with female care receivers and likewise, male Stephen Ministers with male care receivers.  Each care receiver can be assured of total confidentiality in the process.  Some of the needs that Stephen Ministers seek to serve but are not limited to:

·      Hospitalized persons
·      Aging and elderly
·      Terminally ill
·      Those with disabilities and their families
·      Those moving into or out of our community
·      Those needing support of a Christian friend
·      Those facing transitions
·      Those separated or divorced
·      Homebound persons
·      Household experiencing birth, adoption, foster care

Service of Remembrance
For those who have suffered loss, our annual Service of Remembrance offers a time for both solitude and reflection. The service offers healing through Scripture, music, uplifting and hopeful messages, and the comforting presence of others who have also lost loved ones. This beautiful service is highlighted with a time of speaking the name of each person being remembered, and lighting a candle in memory of each individual.

The Service of Remembrance will be Wednesday, December 18 at 7 p.m. in the sanctuary.
Rev. Kyle Roberson will officiate this one-hour service.

To register the name of a person to be remembered, please email Dianne Will. Provide your name and telephone number, and the name of the person to be remembered. If it’s a name that could be mispronounced, please include a phonetic pronunciation to assist the pastor who will be reading the name during the service. You must submit your request no later than 5 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 11. If email is not an option, please call the church office.

The Compassionate Friends
The group meets the 4th Tuesday of each month, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Evans Hall, 1st floor, room 2129 on the campus of White's Chapel.
"The Compassionate Friends is about transforming the pain of grief into the elixir of hope. It takes people out of the isolation society imposes on the bereaved and lets them express their grief naturally. With the shedding of tears, healing comes. And the newly bereaved get to see people who have survived and are learning to live and love again." –Simon Stephens, founder of The Compassionate Friends.
The words of TCF's Founder, Simon Stephens, resonate with those who have come to The Compassionate Friends hoping to find a purpose in a life that suddenly seems so empty.
Whether your family has had a child die (at any age from any cause) or you are trying to help those who have gone through this life-altering experience, The Compassionate Friends exists to provide friendship, understanding, and hope to those going through the natural grieving process.

Next Steps in Your Grief Journey Support Group
The group meets Mondays from 2:30 pm, in the Center for Spiritual Care
Grief is a journey that no one should have to travel alone. It is helpful to gather with others who are experiencing similar feelings. This monthly support group provides a caring and safe environment, as well as a time for mutual support and encouragement. This group is for those who may be taking their first steps on the journey or those who have already been through WC’s Understanding Your Grief class. We will not follow a specific curriculum, but will begin our time with prayer, offer time for sharing, and present a spiritual practice that has been prayerfully chosen to assist you in your journey. Participants are encouraged to share only if they are comfortable.
All are welcome, and you can join at any time; registration is not required.

Understanding Your Grief
Wednesdays beginning January 8 from 1:30 to 3 p.m. or 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the Center for Spiritual Care
Whether it has been recently or some time has passed, the death of a loved one often leaves us feeling paralyzed and wondering how we can move forward. You are invited to attend one of these 11-week studies that uses scriptural wisdom to explore the pain and emptiness that accompanies grief with the understanding that each of us grieves differently, and in our own time and pace. The class will be helpful in offering specific coping strategies to guide the way back to fullness of life.  If you or someone you know is grieving the death of a loved one, we invite you to join us and all are welcome.   We will be following Alan Wolfelt’s Understanding Your Grief  participant book and Journal; both books are available for purchase in our Circuit Writers bookstore. Each class is limited to 12 participants; you will be attending only the class time you register for, as each group is independent of the other (you cannot move between classes). Contact Dianne Will at dwill@whiteschapelumc.com or 817-481-4147, if you have any questions.

Handling the Holidays in a Season of Loss
Monday, December 9, 2019
6:30 pm in Founder’s Chapel

The holidays can be difficult to navigate when you have lost someone or something important to you. How do you handle all the invitations and events of the holidays? How do you care for yourself? What if emotions are overwhelming? Each of us handles grief and loss uniquely in our lives. This event will offer ideas for walking through special times while we are grieving. Together, we will explore possible choices and options for managing grief and loss during the holidays.

Debby Creagh, RN, MDiv, will facilitate the discussion. She says “There has always been a special interest in my studies about grief and loss. Personal experiences with both have given me a heart to walk beside others journeying through grief.” Debby’s education and background includes a Master of Divinity with Concentration in Pastoral Care and Support, Chaplain Residency, Bachelor of Nursing, Faith Community Nurse Coordinator, and is a Candidate for Ordained Ministry in The United Methodist Church. Debby and her husband, Mike, are WC members, proud grandparents and avid travelers.

We look forward to seeing you on December 9 – all are welcome. Registration is required if you would like childcare (infant-5yrs).
