Refugee Initiative

WC's Refugee Initiative “meets, greets, and completes" the cultural acclimation refugees rely on to become contributing members of our society.  Combining our own volunteers with those of neighboring faith communities, we mentor arriving families; tutor students; enhance adults’ language skills; assist with resumes and job interviews; help with securing drivers’ licenses and finding doctors; and host programs for American and refugee youth to share their life experiences, insights, and dreams.  Our outreach has a place for every talent, age, and time constraint.
"Hope is to see that there is light despite all of the darkness.”

- Desmond Tutu

Rip Tide
World events nowadays are unsettling - to say the least. You can’t stand in front of Russian tanks to prevent devastation in Ukraine. And you probably don't know where to start to tackle atrocities targeting women in Afghanistan. But you can make a world of difference when you teach refugees about American culture and English - in the Light of Christian kindness, One-to-one.
Be a part of a Ripple Effect! Join our volunteer faculty for a once-a week class offered to adult refugees and legal immigrants through WC's English Language Learning (ELL) program. In August, we will enlarge our program through a partnership with First United Methodist Church of Hurst. Classes will be held on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon, starting August 20. First UMC of Hurst, sited near many of our students, is preparing fresh facilities to accommodate a new year of successes.
We share an appealing curriculum that's easy to teach and includes endless practical lessons in American culture. Our "culture days" invite students to bring in cultures of their own - via stories, music, culinary delights, and other chosen enrichments. Our small general store offers tangible treats to students whose "bonus bucks" buy small, donated items as "earnings" for perfect on-time attendance, extra credit presentations in class, and other patterns of excellence that ensure resilience and upward mobility in our modern world. We are creative and inspired!

elp us create a safe and productive space for souls who have arrived here after the real-world traumas and persecutions visited on them in their homelands. We, too, know the feeling of powerlessness - and the Good of a Hand extended across the Water.

Refugee Outreach: Meet, Greet, and Complete - More Room for Volunteers!

When refugees arrive at DFW airport, they often enter with the barest of belongings and little knowledge about the place they’re about to call home. Can you drive a family to an apartment prepared by our team or provide a welcome meal? We deliver Christian warmth and know-how, along with other 21st century essentials. We call it “Meet, Greet & Complete”- and we’d love for you to climb on board!
